Why There Is No Best Watch And How I Don't Have A Favorite Timepiece
Choose just one watch forever? Why?I am sorry to disappoint the superlative loving masses but there is no one best watch and I regret to inform you that I don't have a standout favorite timepiece or watch brand. It is worth noting that what prompted me to assemble the collection of thoughts in this article is the experience of several years of people innocently repeatedly asking me these questions. The inquisitive remarks themselves are no doubt natural but few people seem to be satisfied with my response. When it comes down to it, I cannot in good faith claim a single best or list of
BEST FROM: & Friends June 20, 2014
For most of us, our fathers have had a big influence on our lives and our tastes in watches, and in a special Father's Day article, we explore this relationship as part of this month's round-up. That aside, we also go hands on with new watches from Panerai, Omega, Rolex, and Tissot. For vintage watch lovers, we uncover a rare Breguet dive watch from the 60s and also check out a guide to buying vintage Rolex watches. Finally, for all the history lovers, we trace the beginnings of the Swatch Group and also find out how Glassh¡§1te became the heart of German watchmaking.1. Panerai Luminor
Jean Dunand Shabaka Watch
Hands-on with the Shabaka watch was very interesting. I have been fascinated by the Art Deco-themed watch by Jean Dunand since it came out a few years ago. Jean Dunand is an interesting super-high-end brand that produces exclusively "piece unique" creations. On my wrist is an 18k white gold Shabaka with a baguette diamond-lined bezel.I think the Shabaka originally came out in 2007, but new pieces are slowly being made. The movement is entirely made and designed by Christophe Claret. In fact, all Jean Dunand watches (Tourbillon Orbital, Palace) have movements done by Christophe Claret.
Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Magnate GMT Watch
As much as I love GMT complications, I have to say that the name for this one is just silly. "Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon Magnate GMT." Four proper names plus GMT suffix? That said, the watch itself is pretty nice looking. I'm not fond of the Rolex-style cyclops over the date, though some quite like them [Ed. note. You'll see some hands-on images I took with watch here. I believe that the magnifier crystal is actually reverse mounted (inside the crystal) so as not to stick out of the crystal]. The fixed bezel is less useful than a rotating one, but on the other hand it's filled with lumi
Perrelet Double Rotor Turbine Watch Video
The recently announced Perrelet Turbine watch (that I discussed here) has proved extremely popular, which is a good thing because this new video sheds more light upon this impressive timepiece. You get not only a great view of the watch in action, but a good understanding of how the double rotor system is engineered. Seeing the watch in the video in operation allows me to appreciate this desirable timepiece all the more.In particular I like how the crown is not actually pulled out much, but has a fold-out flap that allows for adjustment and manual winding (if necessary). This is done
