Welcome back to an original aBlogtoWatch feature, "My First Grail Watch." In this series, we ask prominent people in the watch industry about the first timepiece that they lusted after. Today, we're speaking with Xavier Nolot, the CEO Audemars Piguet North America. For his First Grail, he went back to very beginning, calling out a lowly LCD-equipped watch as his first.aBlogtoWatch (ABTW): Who are you, and what is your relationship to the watch industry?Xavier Nolot (XN): I?¡¥m the CEO for Audemars Piguet for the Americas. Kicking off the second-last month of year, we review a couple of watches with interesting materials for cases - the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Ceramic diver and the Archimedes Pilot 42 Bronze. Richard Mille To Debut Incredibly Expensive Carbon NTPT-Cased Watch
Well, would you look at that - the folks over at Richard Mille, known purveyors, of all things, to make crazy lightweight watches, have just come up with a new material to incorporate into their timepiece designs. ?Then again, I say (type?) that with tongue firmly in cheek. While this is certainly a new material in the world of luxury watches, it's not something they invented on their own. Breguet Classique 5717 Hora Mundi Watch
One of the most useful mechanical complications I saw at Baselworld 2011 was the time switching mechanism on the new Breguet Classique 5717 Hora Mundi watch. Aside from having a very clever feature for travelers, the Hora Mundi mixes contemporary looks with Breguet classicism. That sounds like a bit of a irony, but they seemed to pull it off.The watch is large for Breguet Classique pieces at 44mm wide and over 13mm thick. The Classique style case looks nice in the size, but I think the design may have benefited from curved lugs in these dimensions. Of course the coined edge is always
Seiko Ananta Automatic Watches
It has been a few months since I was in Japan visiting with Seiko. Shortly thereafter I wrote about the Spring Drive versions of their newish and impressive Seiko Ananta line of watches. If you recall, Ananta is Seiko's first line of high-end watches for the world market. The watches totally changed my perception of the brand, and I think if you check them out they will change the way you look at Seiko as well. The Spring Drive watches aren't cheap. While they are a great value for the money, the Seiko Ananta Spring Drive Chronograph watch can still get up to the $6,000 - $7,000 range.
