Konstanin Chaykin Carpe Diem Watch: Finally, An Hourglass For The Wrist
Second only to the common jest of placing a sundial on the face of a wristwatch, is the suggestion that there be an hourglass. Yes, the timing device of antiquity has a very low occurrence of actually being referenced on modern timepieces in any significant way. That perhaps is due to the fact that incorporating sand in a watch dial isn't always the best idea. Nevertheless, the enterprising mind behind the Russian watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin decided that he wanted to be the first person to do it. Behold the Konstantin Chaykin Carpe Diem, the first wristwatch with a mechanical hourgla
Baselworld 2013: Swatch Sistem51- Only 100 Swiss Francs for a Mechanical Watch!
Today sees the launch of the Swatch Sistem51 and the fire burns bright once more.Swatch watches were one of the guilty pleasures of my youth. When the Swatch craze took over the world in the early 90's, I was there in the thick of it. It was a sort of petite-men's watch with a unique cushion-shaped case and a three-hand movement. It was based on a series of timepieces that Sinn produced for Audi a few years earlier. Among those Audi models was a chronograph version of th
Vacheron Constantin Packard Grande Complication Pocket Watch
Last June there was a special Christie's auction that featured a series of timepieces owned by James Ward Packard - namesake of Packard automobiles. The highlight of the auction was this specially commissioned Vacheron Constantin pocket watch made in 1918.The pocket watch came in a hand-chiseled 20k gold case with J.W. Packard's insignia on the caseback. The beautiful gold case was hand-engraved and the dial was simplistic given all the features the watch had. Inside of the grande complication was a beautiful movement that offered the time, 30 minute chronograph, minute
