My First Grail Watch: Scott Devon of Devon Works
Welcome back to an original aBlogtoWatch feature, "My First Grail Watch". In this series, we ask prominent people in the watch industry about the first timepiece that they lusted after. Today, we're speaking with Scott Devon, the founder and Creative Director of Devon Works. While today he's best well-known for his belt-driven watches, his roots start with the "classics", courtesy of his father and grandfather.aBlogtoWatch (ABTW): Who are you and what is your relationship to the watch industry?Scott Devon (SD): My name is Scott Devon, Founder and Creative Director for Devon Works and
Fortis Marinemaster Vintage Limited Edition Watch
In 2012 Fortis released this lovely "Vintage" edition of the Marinemaster (that we first wrote about here). It troubles me a bit when brands use the term "vintage" as applied to a new watch. Is it just me or does that cause unnecessary confusion? What for example do you call the actual original Fortis Marinemaster that this timepiece is based on, the "actual Marinemaster Vintage?" I'm not entirely sure. Despite my meticulous focus on the meaning of words, I was glad to finally get a hands-on look at these watches. Limited to just 500 pieces in each of the two colors, in a few years the
Girard-Perregaux For Gucci: Dive XL Watch
Gucci and the Sowind Group (that produce Girard-Perregaux watches) are both part of the larger PPR luxury group. These familial ties allows for unique creations such as this Gucci version of the well-known high-end Sea Hawk diver from Girard-Perregaux. With the Gucci name on it and a redesigned case, the timepiece is simply called the XL Dive, or sometimes just "Dive." Interestingly, from a price perspective, it opens up a bit below the Girard-Perregaux model, so let's see how it pans out.At Baselworld 2013 James Stacey and I spent time with Gucci to check out their new wares. He was
Vacheron Constantin Vladimir Custom Watch
The owner of this watch named it The Vladimir. He was able to call it whatever he liked because he custom commissioned it from Vacheron Constantin. The brand is among the few that will entertain clients who not only want custom watches, but also custom watch movements. This is part of their highly exclusive "Atelier Cabinotiers" department. Do you know what it takes to design, prototype, perfect, manufacture, finish, and test a watch movement? Usually those costs are built into some type of economy of scale. Now think of all that for just one movement. We are talking incredible prices
Guer Man Trace Watch Is Wild And Woodsy
A watch like this upcoming Guer Man Trace is easy to make fun of. I mean it is pretty interesting look, and I see all of the artistic merit - I am sure I would even wear one. But instead of us feeling all wowed by its novelty, we are going to be compelled to laugh about it. It does come in a log watch box after all. This little concept brings me back to the early 1990s when one of my favorite cartoons of all time was on, Ren & Stimpy. Of the most iconic elements of the adultish cartoon show was their in-show advertisements of absurd hypothetical products. Do you remember "Lo
