BEST FROM: & Friends May 7th
In the third edition of our bi-weekly news roundup, it's all about Basel, Basel, Basel. Baselworld 2013 has just concluded and while many are understandably quite disappointed that we didn't get a brand new Daytona, there's still a lot of other interesting watches on show. And here are some of my favorite articles of Baselworld 2013 from aBlogtoWatch and around the Internet. But that's not all, we also checkout an interesting interview with Laurent Picciotto and also an interesting article of how you can share your love of watches and watch collecting with your partner.1. ArtyA Son Of Sound: The High-End Guitar Watch
In the last year Swiss art watch brand ArtyA has transformed itself from extremely avant garde "creative" watches to something like this guitar head-shaped Son of Sound collection. The brand was once about just creating totally one-of-a-kind watches that combined the work of an artist and watch maker. The "piece unique" moniker was more a result of that production style versus an effort. For example if you take a steel case and "deface" it (as founder Yvan Arpa liked to say) with electricity and machines by hand, no two cases are going to look alike (i.e. "piece unique"). Frederique Constant Healey Chrono Watch Review
As the official timer of the "Healey Challenge" race in the UK, Frederique Constant has been making Austin Healey themed timepieces for a little while now. I have always been fascinated with the collection given their solid good looks and classically sporty styles. If you recall, some versions of the watches comes with little model Austin Healey cars, while others came with the Frederique Constant built "Stoptimer." When asked why the "stoptimer" is called that versus a stopwatch, the Frederique Constant rep I asked just shrugged. It just goes to further my theory that much of the watc
Tournaire Expression Paris Watch
Jewelry and watch designer Philippe Tournaire has created some really interesting things. For me, he will be most famous for being the guy who turns architecture into rings. Really. Image a ring with a gold building on it - yup. Tournaire's newest creation combines this concept with a watch, but in a way that is just sort of weird. In fact, as hard as it may have been someone finally make the beautiful city of Paris kinda unattractive. To be fair I do like his basic watch designs. Even they have optional "architecture" around the side of the case. This one however has a thick fr
RSW Diving Tool Watches: Toolicious
How cool is this new Diving Tool watch from Rama Swiss Watch (RSW)? The wildly functional yet avant garde "instrument" watch seems totally plausible to wear, yet nothing else like it exists. The case is mostly square, with an functional, but cool, looking round rotating bezel over the dial. I like to totally horizontal orientation of the crowns and pushers as well - nice design cue. The first few seconds of looking at the watch you'll be a bit distracted by the novel look. Then you'll appreciate just how usable the watch is. Really nothing that crazy about the design in terms o
