Do Mechanical Watches Need To Be Wound Regularly To Prevent Damage? - Ask Watch Experts Questions About Watches
Empiricus T. from Singapore asks:I’m from the small island state of Singapore where we have quite a small but active group of watch lover. I am a budding collector myself and I want to ask if automatic watches will be damaged if I do not wear it regularly nor do I place it on a watch winder? I read that if automatic watches do not move over a certain period of time, the lubricating oil and synthetic rubies in it will wear down. True? If this is the case, then many retailers might be handing over ‘damaged’ watches to us since many leave their watches in the shelf without muc
Urwerk Encourages Obsessive Accuracy Tinkering With EMC Watch Movement
Pretty soon, high-end Geneva-based watch maker Urwerk, will release a watch that includes their new EMC mechanical movement - a mechanism that will no doubt appear ironic and perhaps insane to those not acquainted with the passions that drive the mechanical watch industry. In short, the EMC blurs the lines between mechanical and quartz timing regulation in an amusingly obsessive way that points to the sheer limits of how much your average watch aficionado is willing to endure. Urwerk calls the EMC the first "mechanical smart watch movement," so let's find out what it is all about.A li
Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph Blue Dial Watch
Some people will probably tell you that a "sporty Vacheron Constantin" is an oxymoron. It sort of is, but that hasn't stopped a lot of traditional formal watch makers from producing high-end sport timepieces meant more for casual wear than actual active abuse. Sometimes I want to think of a sport watch as something that is meant to go deep, go high, or be beaten up. Then again, pieces like this Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph will jump at the chance to sit on your wrist whilst y
RGM 160 Watch Review
This is the RGM 160. It is on the mid-to-upper range of RGM watch which don't use in-house made RGM movements. With a versatile and useful set of complications from the ETA Valjoux 7751 automatic movement, this is a very attractive mix of having an American made watch with a Swiss movement. RGM is making their own movements now for the 801 handwinder and tourbillon, but have not ventured into other complications. Historically, the Swiss approach was to make modular movements and buy prepackaged complications from companies such as Dubois Dupraz and Soprod, I'll be curious to see what r
Porsche Design P'6910 Indicator Watch Available On James List
One of the coolest watches of the last few years didn't see its proper level of greatness because it was too expensive. At over $100,000 (retailed at about 78,000 euros) the Porsche Design Indicator remained a beautiful and fundamentally superior design that you could only appreciate from a distance. Eterna, who makes all the watches for Porsche Design, still makes 2-4 of the Indicator watches per a year, but on request only. The watch is limited to 50 pieces, so eventually they will be all out. Let's take a quick peak at this watch. You can also get them online, with a few available c
