Remembering General Norman Schwarzkopf & His Watches
"I always wore two watches during the [Gulf] war. The one on my left arm was set on Saudi Arabian time and the Seiko on my right arm was set on Eastern Standard Time. That way I could quickly glance at my watches and instantly know the time in both Saudi Arabia and Washington, D.C. Sincerely, H. Norman Schwarzkopf General, U.S. Army, Retired." Words from recently departed General Schwarzkopf in a letter to the Antiquorum auction house in the late 1990s when he donated one his watches for a charity auction. The watch was a Seiko SKX009 diver and was on his wrist for at least the entiret
Dietrich Snow Watch
This was a pretty cool and innovative new watch that I got to learn about at the 2012 GTE event in Geneva recently. The brand is called DDietrich (by Mr. Dietrich) and they have at least two models right now. One is called the Night and another is called the Snow. The Night is nice and good but the Snow really caught my eye.The versatile watch is designed to go either on your wrist or over your jacket while skiing or out in the snow (while wearing a larger jacket). The modern design is minimalistic, but also functional and pretty. Unlike most watches with two straps, this one has four
Richard Mille RM 056 All Sapphire Crystal Watch
No doubt it is cool. It is also wildly expensive and a showpiece above all else. This new highly limited edition watch from Richard Mille is the RM 056 and comes in an all sapphire crystal case. It is very visually intriguing and costs a mere $1,650,000. Probably easier to laugh about the price rather than get upset.According to Richard Mille it requires over 1000 hours to produce the case of the watch. The case is identical to that of previous Richard Mille Felipe Massa pieces. The movement is also an updated evolution on that RM 008 caliber. Only the case is in sapphire crystal and
Sea-God Dive Watches
As I discussed on the HourTime Show watch podcast, the term "Sea God" for a dive watch brand sits somewhere between clever and obnoxious. The new Italian brand is an enthusiastic yet unabashed jab are Rolex. From the sharp visual resemblance with Rolex's dive watches to the almost satirical text on the dial of "Superlative Design" - this fashion function line of diver still seems to satisfy. The name Sea-God evokes an almost deistic quality in the watch (well literally speaking it does). To proclaim a watch as god of the sea is a bold yet empty statement. Even the
Montblanc Grand Tourbillon Heures Mysterieuses Is Like A Watch In A Tuxedo
In Villeret Montblanc is feeling very proud of itself. It has gone from making pens, to being a preeminent watch maker. The recent acquisition of popular family owned (previously) Minerva gained Montblanc that ability to tout in-house movements. So now their watches look nice and have lots of bragging rights. While I enjoy some Montblanc watch designs more than others, I can't argue that any of their recent releases are anything less than elegant and well conceived. In celebration of Minerva turning 150 years old, we have the Montblanc Grand Tourbillon Heures Mysterieuses (that is
